Nine Vintage Modulation

Voices. Instant Movement,

Depth, and Swirl.

Inside Murmur

Nine Classics, One Instant Workflow

Murmur puts nine essential vintage modulation voices behind one simple control set, so you can move from smooth amp tremolo to watery harmonic pulse, hazy vibe, lush chorus, jet flanger, rotary swirl, phaser sweep, or true pitch vibrato in seconds. No menu diving, no patching, no guessing—just pick a voice and start moving the track.

Not a Clone—a Faithful Motion Machine

Every other pedal in the Smear catalog chases a specific circuit, modeled part by part. Murmur is deliberately different. Modulation is about how the sound moves, so instead of copying one schematic, we rebuilt the motion itself: the sweep shape, lag, asymmetry, pulse, wobble, and musical feel that make classic pedals and amps sound alive.

One Extra Control, Tuned Per Voice

Rate and Depth handle the essentials, while the third main control changes role depending on the selected voice. On the tremolo and vibe voices it adjusts the pulse character, from soft and rounded to more defined and rhythmic. On Phaser and Flanger it adds resonant feedback. On Rotary it balances the bass rotor and horn. On Vibrato it controls rise time, and on Chorus it works like a tone filter. Engage Sync to lock the movement perfectly to your session tempo.

Schematic parameters

What do the knobs actually do?

Type

Selects one of nine vintage modulation voices: Opto Trem, Bias Trem, Harmonic Trem, U Vibe, Phaser, Flanger, Rotary, Vibrato, and Chorus. One knob takes you from amp throb and psychedelic swirl to lush width, jet sweep, spinning speaker motion, and true pitch warble.

Rate

Sets the speed of the modulation, from a slow hypnotic drift to a fast, vocal warble. On Rotary, it controls the perceived speed of the spinning speaker movement. With Sync engaged, Rate locks to musical divisions of your host tempo for perfectly timed pulses, sweeps, and chops.

Depth

Controls how far the effect moves, from a barely-there shimmer to deep, fully animated modulation. Each voice is tuned so the same knob range feels musical whether you are adding a gentle chorus glow, a pulsing tremolo bed, or a heavy vibe swirl.

Extra

A pedal-specific character control that changes role for each voice. On Opto Trem, Bias Trem, Harmonic Trem, and U Vibe it adjusts the pulse character from smooth and rounded to more defined and rhythmic. On Phaser and Flanger it controls Resonance for stronger peaks and more vocal movement. On Rotary it sets the bass-rotor/horn balance. On Vibrato it controls Rise Time, letting the warble swell in naturally. On Chorus it acts as a tone Filter, from bright and glassy to dark and creamy.

Sync

Locks the modulation rate to your project tempo, making it easy to create pulsing tremolo, rhythmic filter-like motion, timed chorus movement, and tempo-perfect psychedelic sweeps.

Voice 1 — Opto Trem

Smooth optical amplitude tremolo in the blackface amp tradition. A modeled photocell-style lag rounds off the throb so it pulses naturally instead of clicking or chopping harshly. Perfect for surf pulse, dreamy chords, slow amp sway, and vintage clean movement. Extra adjusts the pulse character from soft and rounded to more defined and rhythmic.

Voice 2 — Bias Trem

A gutsier brownface-style bias tremolo with a chunkier, more asymmetric throb. It adds a touch of warm, tube-like push as the sweep digs in, making it great for swampy rhythm parts, gritty vintage pulse, and tracks that need movement with attitude. Extra adjusts the pulse character from rounded movement to a more assertive rhythmic feel.

Voice 3 — Harmonic Trem

The rare, watery harmonic tremolo sound: lows and highs move against each other to create a phasey, almost pitch-bending pulse. It is deeper and more three-dimensional than standard volume tremolo, ideal for psychedelic guitar, cinematic keys, surf textures, and hypnotic clean parts. Extra shapes how soft or pronounced the harmonic pulse feels.

Voice 4 — U Vibe

A hazy photocell-style vibe with throbbing, three-dimensional movement inspired by classic psychedelic and vintage rock records. It gives chords, leads, keys, and pads that chewy, swirling motion that feels alive under the fingers. Extra adjusts the pulse character, from smoother wave motion to a stronger, more rhythmic throb.

Voice 5 — Phaser

A rich all-pass phaser with a musical sweep and a smooth logarithmic feel. Keep Extra low for a soft, round whoosh, or turn it up to add resonance for a sharper, more liquid, vocal phase sound. Great for funk rhythm, synth motion, dreamy guitars, and animated mix details.

Voice 6 — Flanger

A BBD-style flanger built for classic jet-plane sweep, metallic comb movement, and dramatic stereo motion. Extra controls regeneration, taking the sound from subtle movement and soft whoosh to intense resonant peaks and sci-fi modulation. Use it on guitars, drums, synths, transitions, and anything that needs motion with edge.

Voice 7 — Rotary

A two-rotor rotating speaker voice with bass rotor weight, horn shimmer, Doppler-style pitch motion, amplitude throb, and directional high-frequency movement. Extra balances the bass rotor against the horn, letting you move from warm cabinet churn to brighter spinning-speaker shimmer.

Voice 8 — Vibrato

True pitch vibrato with no dry signal, giving you pure warble instead of chorus-style doubling or tremolo-style volume wobble. Use it for seasick tape-like movement, vintage pitch drift, dreamy leads, and expressive sustained notes. Extra sets the rise time so the vibrato can swell in naturally at the start of a phrase.

Voice 9 — Chorus

A wide, lush analog-style chorus with BBD-inspired warmth and three-dimensional shimmer. It can add subtle width, dreamy clean-guitar polish, synth pad movement, or full vintage chorus richness. Extra works as a tone filter, moving the chorus from bright and glassy to dark, soft, and creamy.
